PE

“A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.”

National Curriculum, 2014

At Allerton Bywater Primary School, we believe that high-quality PE is an entitlement for all pupils. Our aim is to inspire a love for PE, Sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle that will continue throughout EVERY child’s life. We believe that high-quality PE reduces barriers to participation for both enjoyment and strengthening mental health and aids children to inform their own healthy, active lifestyle choices.

Our PE lessons at Allerton Bywater Primary School are mostly devised from the Primary PE Planning online Platform. The progressive learning objectives allow for a consistent delivery and structure across the school (an exciting learning journey from Early Years through to KS2) ensuring that we meet or exceed the ambition of the National Curriculum. This ensures our children are increasingly challenged, motivated and engaged in all PE lessons. Primary PE Planning is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and focuses on the development of agility, coordination, balance and competition. Our children receive an inclusive, broad and balanced programme of PE as the curriculum is mapped to ensure that children participate in a wide range of activities.

In EYFS, children have access to the outdoors throughout the day where there are different areas of provision to support them in physical development. Enhancements are made throughout the year to provide pupils with different challenges. In PE, EYFS focus on developing basic movements and control as well as listening to instructions. They play simple games or perform basic sequences, allowing them to work on movement skills.

Across KS1 and KS2, our pupils have 2 taught PE lessons a week – typically one indoor and outdoor. Children learn a variety of skills in KS1 which can be applied in small, sided team games. In KS2, these skills are refined and used alongside tactics. Swimming is taught in Year Four for half of the year (the two year four classes alternate three half terms of swimming with three half terms of guitar). Those pupils who don't meet the expected standard in swimming at the end of this time take intensive swimming lessons further up school. This is a priority due to the amount of open water in our locality.

Our PE curriculum is enhanced by a number of different clubs across both Key Stages as well as lunch time sports coaches. We also provide the opportunity for children for Year 1 to Year 6 to participate in a range of sporting events and fixtures against other primary schools in the trust which are hosted by Brigshaw High School. These opportunities, as well as the in-school opportunities for the children to compete against themselves and others during PE lessons, build character and self-confidence as well as developing school values including respect, resilience, integrity, commitment, leadership and teamwork.

As part of the BLP, we consult with Brigshaw High School to ensure smooth progression between KS2 and KS3.

Our school aims are linked to those in line with the PE national curriculum, which are to ensure that all children:
- develop competence in a broad range of physical activities;
- are physically active for sustained periods of time;
- engage in competitive sports and activities;
- understand how to improve in different physical activities and sports and know how to evaluate and recognise their own success;
- lead healthy, active lives.
